What dental and vision insurance cover
Dental plans usually group services into tiers. Preventive care, such as cleanings, exams and X-rays, is often covered at the highest level. Basic services like fillings and simple extractions come next, and major services like crowns, bridges and dentures are covered at a lower level, often after a waiting period. Annual maximums cap what the plan pays each year.
Vision plans typically cover a routine eye exam and give you an allowance or set copay toward glasses or contact lenses, often once every 12 or 24 months.
Who it fits
- People on Original Medicare, which generally does not cover routine dental or vision care
- Retirees who had dental and vision through work and lost it
- Anyone whose Medicare Advantage plan has limited dental or vision benefits
- People who know they will need dental work and want help with the cost
How dental plans work
Plans differ in premiums, deductibles, annual maximums, waiting periods and networks. Some let you see any dentist, while others pay more when you stay in-network. Before you choose, check whether your dentist participates and how the plan handles the specific work you expect to need.
Why work with an independent broker
Plans that look alike can pay very differently for a crown or a pair of glasses. Matt compares dental and vision options from the insurers he represents, checks waiting periods and maximums with you, and explains how a plan fits with Medicare Advantage or other coverage. There is no cost to talk.
