One city, two counties

If your address is in the Cabarrus County part of Kannapolis, you choose from Medicare Advantage plans offered in Cabarrus County. If it's in the Rowan County part, you choose from plans offered in Rowan County. Neighbors in the same city can have different plan lists.

Matt MacMillan, an independent licensed broker based in Mooresville, looks up plans using your exact address, so you only compare options you can actually enroll in.

Medicare Advantage basics

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a way to get your Medicare coverage through a private plan approved by Medicare. These plans cover the services Original Medicare Part A and Part B cover, many include Part D drug coverage, and most use provider networks. You generally keep paying your Part B premium.

Prescriptions and pharmacies

Each plan has its own list of covered drugs, called a formulary, and many plans have preferred pharmacies. Matt enters your prescriptions and the pharmacy you use so you can see how each plan would treat them.

When you can enroll or make changes

These are the main windows for joining or changing a Medicare Advantage plan:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): a seven-month window that includes the three months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month and the three months after.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 to December 7 each year, with changes taking effect January 1.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): January 1 to March 31, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan. You can make one change during this period.
  • Special Enrollment Periods: certain life events, such as moving or losing other coverage, may let you make changes at other times.
