Medicare Advantage for Charlotte residents

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a way to get your Medicare coverage through a private plan approved by Medicare. These plans cover the services Original Medicare Part A and Part B cover, many include Part D drug coverage, and most use provider networks. You generally keep paying your Part B premium.

Plans are approved by county. Charlotte is in Mecklenburg County, so you choose from the plans offered there, the same county list your neighbors in Huntersville and Cornelius see.

Networks in a big medical market

Charlotte has large hospital systems and many specialists, and Medicare Advantage networks don't always include all of them. A plan that covers your primary care doctor may not include the specialist or hospital you prefer.

Matt checks each of your doctors, hospitals and your pharmacy against every plan he compares, so you can see the trade-offs before you choose.

When you can enroll or make changes

Medicare has set windows for joining or changing a Medicare Advantage plan:

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): a seven-month window that includes the three months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month and the three months after.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 to December 7 each year, with changes taking effect January 1.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): January 1 to March 31, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan. You can make one change during this period.
  • Special Enrollment Periods: certain life events, such as moving or losing other coverage, may let you make changes at other times.
