What Medicare Advantage is
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a way to get your Medicare coverage through a private plan approved by Medicare. These plans cover the services Original Medicare Part A and Part B cover, most include Part D drug coverage, and some include extra benefits, such as dental, vision or hearing, that vary by plan. Most use provider networks, such as HMOs or PPOs, and you generally keep paying your Part B premium.

When you can enroll or make changes
- Initial Enrollment Period: a seven-month window that includes the three months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month and the three months after.
- Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 to December 7 each year, with changes taking effect January 1.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: January 1 to March 31, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Special Enrollment Periods: certain life events, like moving or losing other coverage, may let you make changes at other times.
What to compare
- Whether your doctors and hospitals are in the plan's network
- How your prescriptions are covered and what they would cost
- Premiums, copays and the plan's yearly out-of-pocket maximum
- Extra benefits that matter to you, such as dental, vision or hearing (benefits vary by plan)
- Whether you need referrals or prior authorization for care
How Matt helps
He gathers your doctors, prescriptions and priorities, compares plans from the carriers he represents in your county, and explains the trade-offs so you can decide. He also helps with enrollment and stays your point of contact when questions come up later. Plan availability varies by area, and he does not offer every plan available in your area. You can contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for information on all of your options.

Medicare Advantage plans still have copays and an out-of-pocket maximum, and Original Medicare generally doesn't cover routine dental, vision or long-term care at home. Supplemental coverage such as hospital indemnity or dental and vision may help with some of those costs.
