How Much Does Final Expense Insurance Cost in NC?

Why there's no one answer

Two people in the same North Carolina town can pay very different premiums for the same amount of final expense coverage. Price depends on who you are, how much coverage you want and which insurer you apply with.

This guide walks through what drives the cost so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote. For the basics of the coverage itself, see our final expense insurance page.

What you're paying for

Final expense insurance is whole life insurance with a smaller death benefit. It pays cash to your beneficiary, who can use it for funeral, burial or cremation costs, medical bills or anything else. Most policies are designed to last for life as long as premiums are paid, and premiums typically stay level once issued.

The factors that affect your premium

  • Your age when you apply. Younger applicants generally pay less for the same benefit. With a level-premium policy, the rate set at issue usually doesn't rise, so waiting typically means paying more each month. Insurers also set their own issue ages.
  • How much coverage you want. More coverage costs more. Matching the amount to what you actually want covered is one of the simplest ways to control cost.
  • Your health and medications. Most plans are simplified issue: no exam, but health questions and a check of prescription and medical records. Your answers affect both the price and the type of benefit you qualify for.
  • Tobacco and nicotine use. Tobacco users generally pay more. Insurers define nicotine use and look-back periods differently.
  • Your sex. Many insurers price coverage differently for men and women of the same age.
  • The type of underwriting. A level benefit pays in full from day one. A graded benefit limits the payout for natural-cause deaths in the first few years. Guaranteed issue asks no health questions but has a waiting period and usually costs more for the same benefit.
  • How you pay and what you add. Payment frequency and optional riders can change the price.

How much coverage do you need?

Start with the arrangements you'd want. According to the National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study, the national median cost of an adult funeral with viewing and burial was $8,300, and $6,280 for a funeral with viewing and cremation. Those medians don't include cemetery costs, a marker or items like flowers or an obituary, and the burial figure doesn't include a vault.

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home must give you a written, itemized price list when you ask about arrangements in person. Add any bills you don't want to leave behind, or use our final expense coverage estimator.

North Carolina things to know

  • Answer health questions honestly. North Carolina law (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 58-58-22) requires individual life policies to include an incontestability provision: after a policy has been in force for two years, the insurer generally can't contest it based on statements in the application. Misstatements in the first two years can put a claim at risk.
  • Check your agent's license. The North Carolina Department of Insurance offers an online license lookup.
  • Final expense isn't a pre-need plan. A pre-need contract is arranged with one funeral home. Final expense insurance pays your beneficiary in cash.

Ways to keep coverage affordable

  • Buy the amount you need for the costs you care about, not the maximum available.
  • Apply sooner rather than later, since age affects price and health can change.
  • Compare several insurers, especially if you have health conditions.
  • Ask whether you qualify for a level benefit before accepting a graded or guaranteed issue plan.
  • Choose a payment schedule that fits your budget so the policy doesn't lapse.
